In St. Petersburg it is planned to increase the share of public transport working without conductors
The gradual elimination of the conductor position in the staff of public transport enterprises was discussed today at the round table Directions of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Development. The Goals of Transport System Development. Synchronization of Strategic Plans of the Transport Complex.
The event is held as part of the International Innovation Forum of Passenger Transport SmartTRANSPORT at ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The experiment of introducing 13 new routes of public transport that work without conductors has been going on since the middle of last year, said Dmitry Kucherov, Deputy Director for Technology and Technical Support of the State Public Institution Organizer of Transportations. On the buses participating in the project, passengers pay a fare when entering through the front door. “As a result, we didn’t see any fare drawdown on these routes,” he commented.
According to the Organizer of Transportation, today already 89–90% of fare payments are made cashless, mainly using Podorozhnik card. The remainder corresponds to cash and bank card payments, the share of which is extremely small. On the new routes without conductors the volumes of cash payments have recently reduced by 4 times, while the share of Podorozhnik has increased to 93%, noted the Organizer of Transportations.
“It seems to me that we should not fight with fare evaders only with the help of police, it is important to explain that it is just a shame not to pay the fare,” said Dmitry Kucherov.
According to him, now the SPI is working to extend the practice of working without conductors on all public transport of St. Petersburg, which will optimize the cost of its maintenance.
