Expoforum holds the “Continents cup” dance on wheels

On 8-10 September, the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre will host the International “Continents Cup” dance on wheels tournament and the All-Russian dance on wheels competitions. There will be 126 athletes participating from 12 regions of Russia and 48 athletes from 11 world countries.

8 September was the day of official limbering up of the competition participants, while today, 9 September, was the gala opening ceremony of champions.

The holiday was opened by a performance by the dance group “Todes” and a parade of the participants in wheelchairs from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Korea, Slovakia and Russia.

Aide to Chairman of the Federation Council of the RF Federal Assembly, Lyudmila Kostkina, read to the athletes the greeting from Valentina Matvyenko. It noted the important social importance of the “Continents Cup” and also the position of the Federation of Dancing in Wheelchairs in Russia, that this is the persistence in offering people unlimited opportunities.

The St. Petersburg Vice-Governor, Vladimir Kirillov, observed: “Athletes gathered here, strong in spirit. You will give the people an example of will and self-confidence!”

The Plenipotentiary for Human Rights in St. Petersburg, Alexander Shishlov, congratulated the athletes on the holiday that “unites people, countries and continents.” He recalled that Russian athletes cannot currently participate in the World Championship in Belgium.

“I wish you the most rapid restoration of rights and return to the Paralympic family!” he said.

CEO of ExpoForum International, Sergey Voronkov, greeted the guests: “We are at the highest point of St. Petersburg above sea level. And we are happy here to host the Cup, the symbol of the height of spirit, virility and love. In the past championship, the athletes demonstrated solidarity and this is a sign of the high spirit of friendship and love of sports. In the neighbouring pavilion, there are now over 50,000 young people. I am confident that you will charge the young people with an example of how to act towards life and love life. There are no obstacles in life that it would be impossible to overcome. There are no reasons not to love life. I wish you victory!”

President of the Dancing in Wheelchairs Federation, Elena Lozko, the first world dancing on wheels champion, noted: “Dancing in wheelchairs in Russia is 20-years-old. In the Russian regions, there are sports clubs and public organisations that are engaged in this type of sports. There is no age for dancing on wheels: we dance from kindergarten and up to seniors! I wish you a light floor!”

The “Continents Cup” is an annual international competition. The organisers, Dancing in Wheelchairs Federation in Russia and the St. Petersburg club Dancing on Wheels are supported by the RF Ministry of Sports and the St. Petersburg Government. In 2017, the champions are supported for the first time by the Foundation for President’s Grants.

The dancers compete in European, Latin American and free-form programmes, in solo women’s and men’s programmes and in ensemble competitions. This is the first time that juniors 10-16 years of age will dance. They will perform a solo programme and three dances: waltz, samba and jazz.

The “Continents Cup” is the calling card of social and sports Paralympic life in St. Petersburg and Russia.

The tournament will end on 10 September with a gala concert “Show of Champions” with the participation of famous musicians.

At the same time as “Continents Cup,” ExpoForum will host “I Choose Sports” (a city holiday of sports and healthy lifestyle) and “Orange Ball” (All-Russian street basketball tournament).
