Cosplayers came to Expoforum

From 28 through 30 July, the Convention and Exhibition Centre became the attraction focus for lovers of science, fantasy and everything unusual when the International Festival of Fantasy, Film and Science Starcon took place. The festival united 2,000 cosplayers from different cities in forms of beloved heroes of films, animated cartoons, comics and games.

Upon entering the pavilion, the visitors are in several universes. The 32 booths hold fans of Marvel, Fallout, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Supernatural and many others. Here one can socialize with like-minded people, be photographed with beloved personalities, buy images from the fantasy world, go on theme quests and much more.

There is a traditional major costume competition at the festival, where the best CIS and Baltic cosplayers present their works in 14 categories. All the contest costumes are made especially for the festival and are shown for the first time. As one of the festival participants related, it took five months to make his costume of the Lich King (World of Warсraft universe). “The work started with the creation of a pattern made of 3D-models, then I printed and assembled all the parts made of cardboard, reinforced them with epoxy glue, spackle and painted them. There are a lot of parts in the costume, therefore it took a lot of time. In the end, it weighed about 8 kilogrammes. An excellent exercise!” the cosplayer jokes.

Starcon runs in conjunction with the popular science conference Parsec, where the guests expect to meet with famous scientists and popularisers of science. A total of over 50 reports will be given on space, robotics, astronomy, cybernetics and much more. In the updated scientific area, one can see shows of science and technology, as well as state-of-the-art developments of Russian research institutes. On the evening of the first day, there will be a direct broadcast of the rocket launch from the Baykonur cosmodrome.

For the first time during the festival, there will be a contest of short films. Fantasy fans will see selected works of beginning cinematographers. The film providers traditionally make the visitors happy with exclusive film shows and presentations of new films: Baby Driver, Arrival, Suicide Squad, Terminator 2 in 3D and other blockbusters.

The creative association Klik-Klak will show the fantasy comedy TV series Team E. Ilya Prusikin, Eldar Jarakhov, Ruslan Usachev, Guram Narmaniya and other project participants will show the first series in the movie hall and will discuss details and answer all questions.

In 2016, Starcon hosted over 65,000 fans of science fiction and astronautics, as well as famous scientists, authors, astronauts and popular bloggers. This year the organisers expect about 80,000 guests.
