Strategic development of the North is the main theme of the International Forum Arctic: the Present and the Future

On December 2, the International Forum Arctic: the Present and the Future was opened in Pavilions G and H. The Arctic agenda gathered at ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre the representatives of science, business, and government from 40 Russian regions and dozens of foreign countries. At the exhibition you can see a model of a LNG floating thermal power plant, samples of products for travel in regions with extreme conditions, thermal imagers, software for measuring pressure in ice, and other developments.

The forum was opened with the plenary session The Arctic in the Spotlight: Public Policy and Public Interest. President of the Association of Polar Explorers, Special Representative of the President of Russia for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov spoke at it. “The development of the Northern Sea Route is a global goal, for which a lot of efforts have been made. During the pandemic, new federal laws and more than 40 regulations concerning the Arctic were passed. There are a lot of issues to discuss, so this year’s Forum will have a large-scale program,” he said.

The proposals on the development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation were discussed at the plenary session. Representatives of federal legislative and executive authorities, systemic companies, scientific and public organizations expressed their ideas and tried to combine them. The participants of the meeting also paid attention to the social well-being of northern peoples, the development of regional tourism, the preservation of a favorable environmental situation in the region, its transport accessibility, and investment attraction.

Alexander Beglov, governor of St. Petersburg, said that St. Petersburg has a special role in the Arctic development. There are 250 organizations in the city that can provide the northern territories with machinery and equipment. For example, Baltiysky Zavod is building four icebreakers. And in 2020 the Arctic cluster of St. Petersburg was created, which includes 25 industrial enterprises of scientific and educational institutions.

Business program of the International Forum Arctic: the Present and the Future includes more than 50 events by areas of activity: social policy, economics, the Arctic Zone infrastructure, science and technology, ecology, international cooperation, integrated safety of the AZRF, regional development, and creative industries in the Far North. During the event, more than 2,500 delegates will attend it. The main emphasis of the discussion: Russia in the Global Arctic Dialogue, Knowledge and Technology Transfer, The Arctic for Man, Decarbonization and Conservation of the Arctic Ecosystem. The forum is attended by Russia’s largest companies: Russian Space Systems Holding, Nornickel, United Shipbuilding Corporation JSC, Interregional Public Organization Association of Polar Explorers, and others.
