The foundation stone of the future memorial dedicated to the Leningrad Battle has been installed next to EXPOFORUM
On August 12, Aleksander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, took part in the ceremony of founding the memorial complex on the Pulkovo Heights dedicated to the Leningrad Battle during the Great Patriotic War.
The memorial is being created next to the Petersburg Highway, not far from the EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Center, on behalf of Vladimir Putin, President of Russia. The total area of the complex will be 17 ha.
«The new memorial with its park area will become an important cultural and commemorative center not only of Pushkin District, but also of the entire city. It will be visible from the federal highways, the EXPOFORUM venue, where the most significant international events take place. It will be able to be seen even from the plane when approaching Pulkovo Airport», quotes the Governor’s press service Aleksander Beglov’s words.
During the siege of Leningrad, the Pulkovo Border became the front line, the site of fierce battles with the Nazi invaders. For the defense of Leningrad, the Pulkovo Heights were of the greatest strategic importance, towering over the city. It was at this place, near Pulkovo Heights, that units of the 42nd Army of the Leningrad Front held defense for 2 years and 6 months. In 1941, infantry riflemen, Baltic military mariners, and militia soldiers were able to stop the enemy on the outskirts of Leningrad. The Pulkovo Border was the starting point for the strike group of the 42nd Army of the Leningrad Front in the January 1944 offensive.
