St. Petersburg ushers in spring – Chinese style

On 21 February, Lenexpo hosted the Chinese Festival of Spring – a wondrous show featuring dragons, fiery lions, drum lines, national dances and ethnic songs. The festival closed with a series of citywide events timed to coincide with the New Year according to the Chinese Calendar

Welcoming guests to the opening ceremonies, PRC Consul General in St. Petersburg Go Min noted that the tradition of marking the “Festival of Spring” in Russia had emerged just recently – but that that it was becoming more and more popular with each passing year: “Today’s celebrations at the Chinese Business Centre represent but a part of the larger citywide festivities. Lots of folks have gathered, and we feel the support and attention of the Russian people. This speaks to the fact that we all have a common goal – shaping international relations in the spirit of cooperation, peace, understanding and mutual assistance.”

These sentiments were seconded by Representative for the Committee on External Relations Evgeny Grigoriev, who stressed that China, with its sweeping history and magnificent culture, is becoming increasingly-more attractive and appealing to the residents of St. Petersburg, and that the “Festival of Spring” at Lenexpo marks but another step in that direction: “Our two states are separated by tremendous distance, while events such as these only serve to unite, encourage joint work, and facilitate business between our two countries.”

The “Chinese Festival of Spring” was held at Lenexpo for the second time in a row. In 2015, it was attended by more than 3,000 St. Petersburg residents and visitors. “This year, we’ve dramatically expanded our programme. The culture of one of the world’s most ancient civilisations is being displayed in all its glory: professional artists from China, an interactive-amusement and master-class zone, and a market of gifts, souvenirs and other goods,” says the General Director of ExpoForum International, Sergey Voronkov. Plans call for the expansion at Lenexpo of a Chinese Business Park, featuring the city’s largest Chinese restaurant, a showcase area for Chinese goods, and an exposition of Russian products complete with an artistic display gallery. Thus, the Chinese Business Centre is poised to become  a real “China House” in St. Petersburg –a welcome attraction for families on the weekend.
