Rest and work in St. Petersburg: experts summarised 6-month results

On 26 October the CEO of Expoforum International, Sergey Voronkov, spoke at the meeting of the Committee on Convention and Exhibition Activities and Tourism of the St. Petersburg Trade and Industry Chamber. The market participants summarised the 2017 6-month results and shared plans for the future.

  

DeputyChairmanoftheCommitteeonTourismDevelopment,NanaGvichiya, told about the current status and the outlook for convention and exhibition activity in St. Petersburg. “The city is currently a leader on the Russian tourist and congress market,” she stressed.

In the global rating of convention and exhibition cities of the International Conference and Congress Association, ICCA, the Northern capital is ahead of Moscow and is improving its position annually with both cities in the top 100 rating.

In autumn 2017, St. Petersburg received the most prestigious international prize in the tourism World Travel Awards as “Best European City Destination in 2017.” In 2019, for the first time in Russia, the city on the Neva will host the session of the UN General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Positive dynamics are also observed in the tourism indicators: in 2016, over 7 million tourists came to St. Petersburg; it is expected that in 2017 they will number about 8 million.

On the threshold of the FIFA 2018 World Championship, over 960 accommodations have been classified: hotels, mini-hotels and hostels.

In the first 6 months of 2017, the ExpoForum International sites (ExpoForum and Lenexpo) hosted 78 events (19 of their own and 59 guest). In the words of S. Voronkov, the load factor of ExpoForum is rising, in two years, most of the projects moved here from Lenexpo. In addition to their own projects, such as the Gas and Energy Forums, exhibition and fair “Agrorus,” “Job Forum,” the company is developing the congress and event-destinations, and attracting global, rotating congresses.

In 2018, ExpoForum will host the UFI Global Association of the Exhibition Industry Congress, in 2022, the International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas, and many other projects. On 2-7 January 2018, ExpoForum will open a family amusement park “World New Year,” a large project for children and parents.

During the meeting, speeches were also made by acting CEO of the Convention and Exhibition Bureau of St. Petersburg, Dmitry Tsvetkov, Director of the branch of RossTur, Head of the Northwest representative office of the Union of Tourist Agencies, Dmitry Mazannikov, CEO of the Exhibition Association RESTEC, Igor Kirsanov, CEO of Farexpo CJSC, Oleg Shost, and Chairman of Primexpo LLC, Olga Lyashenko.
