Cheerleaders Compete on Pulkovo Heights
“Palmira of the North 2019”, an international cheerleading tournament, took place in EXPOFORUM on 24 March. The event attracted 1,700 athletes from Russia and foreign countries. This is the second time the event has been held in EXPOFORUM.
Cheerleading is one of the most visually pleasing and spectacular sports, combining elements of gymnastics and acrobatics, artistic gymnastics and showmanship. Cheerleading is the name given to groups supporting athletic teams during competitions. Until recently, Russians had only known of cheerleading from American films. The first group of cheerleaders was organised in 1996 in Moscow to entertain the spectators of the Children’s League of American Football (CLAF). The Russian National Cheerleading Federation was registered a little later. Then it was joined by regional federations of Astrakhan, Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Moscow Region and Perm. The St. Petersburg Federation was created in 2005.
This year’s tournament included the first performance by the cheerleading team of St. Petersburg Special Olympics. The competition included performances in all main categories of cheerleading: Cheer, Cheer Mix, Cheer Dance Freestyle, Cheer Jazz, Cheer Hip Hop, Cheer Freestyle and group and partner stunts. The competition in the category of the Cheer Dance Show completed the event.
The next stage of national competitions will take place on 17–19 May in Kazan.
