The topical issues of modern military medicine were discussed at the St. Petersburg International Health Forum

On October 21, the third conference Military Medicine of the XXI Century was held at ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre, which was organized by S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. The event consisted of three sections, which included 37 reports on different topics: problematic issues of military surgery and therapy, prospects of development of the personalized direction in military medicine, and others. The trainees, practicing health workers, received the continuous medical education (CME) points.

The third conference Military Medicine of the XXI Century included the whole range of problems that exist in the field of view of military health workers.

Bogdan Kotiv, head of the program committee of the conference, deputy chief of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy for clinical work, doctor of medical sciences, major general of medical service, made a welcoming speech. He noted the importance of the knowledge gained at the conference for use by specialists in epidemiology, anesthesiology, surgery, intensive care, and others in everyday military medical practice.

Alexander Fisun, head of the Department of Military Health Care Management of the Branch of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, doctor of medical sciences, professor, major general of medical service in reserve, delivered his report in the first section Organization of Military Health Care. The topic of the speech was Military Medicine and Modern Warfare. Alexander Yakovlevich drew the audience’s attention to the fact that it is extremely important to classify conflicts. “It is the understanding of the nature of military action that is the basis for organizing medical care. It is also necessary to create scientific and educational clusters in the regions, following the example of the Multifunctional Medical Center of the Ministry of Defense of Russia in the Far East,” said Alexander Fisun.

Alexander Ovcharenko, adjunct of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, major of medical service, spoke about the problematic issues of using non-professional units of the Disaster Medicine Service of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. He mentioned that the staff of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy participate in emergency recovery around the world and provide medical assistance: localization of an anthrax outbreak in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in 2016, support to Italy in the fight against COVID-19 in the spring of 2020.

The second section of the conference was devoted to problematic issues of military surgery and therapy. The speakers discussed the features of care for the wounded, development of the training system for military field surgery, possibility of reducing cardiovascular risk in the Navy, and other topics.

The third section raised questions about the place and role of scientific research in the development of military medicine.

The conference was part of the St. Petersburg International Health Forum and lasted more than seven hours.
