Congresses and exhibitions as the new engine of economy, and the institution of socialization

The CredoNew International Theoretical Journal published the article by Sergey Voronkov, General Director of EXPOFORUM International, President of the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs, Candidate of Economic Sciences, devoted to the modern role of the convention and exhibition industry of the Russian Federation.

The article considers the special place of the congress and exhibition industry in the life of Russia and the modern world, with importance of congress and exhibition activities for developing both an individual and the entire country to be determined.

«Today, Russia’s global goal is to enter the TOP 5 largest economies in the world. To do this, as a guideline for state economic policy, we need to create a territorial and sectoral matrix of events, a calendar of global events that promote and develop key competencies of the Russian economy and its regions», believes Voronkov.

He also notes that it makes sense to adopt the best international experience (for example, China’s one) and compensate small and medium-sized businesses (with significant simplification of procedures) 50% of their expenses for participating in exhibitions. This requires 2 billion rubles, which is quite comparable to 8 billion rubles allocated at the federal level, for supporting and organizing events.

According to Voronkov, it is necessary to make serious progress in establishing in Russia’s constituent entities convention and exhibition centers under the standards similar to ones that are applied in relation to providing the territories with infrastructure, by analogy with educational, cultural and sports facilities.

Sergey Georgievich notes that development of business tourism becomes increasingly important to allocate as a separate state program included in the National Project «Tourism and Hospitality Industry».

«The convention and exhibition industry may be stated to have transformed from a serving and servicing branch into an independent industry that generates contacts turning into contracts, new trends and goals, growth points and international cooperation. The exhibition industry is no longer just a mirror of the economy, but an engine as it can be rightfully considered. This means that it’s high time for official recognition of convention and exhibition activities as one of the priority sectors of the economy and include it in the main guidelines and programs for development of the country and society», concludes Voronkov.
