«The ring of fortune» spins in expoforum

The Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Region “Tavrichesky” and the combined choir from nearly two hundred artists performed cantata “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff on April 15 in the ExpoForum.

The spectators saw sand pictures replacing one another accompanied by the famous music – the live allegory of the Ring of Fortune, the Fates.

Vocal and orchestral pieces from one of the best known in the musical world works – cantata «Carmina Burana» by German composer Carl Orff – sounded in the concert hall for an hour and a half. From the dramatic piece «O Fortuna» to the exalted joy of spring («Had the Whole World Been Mine», from sitting in a tavern to love yearnings («Glory, the Most Beautiful») – contrasting magic dreams came to life from ancient times accompanied by the music

Everyone in the hall could see the music drawn. Sand animation artist Oksana Kalinko created pictures in front of spectators and they were transmitted to the big screen. A rose suddenly turned into two lovers in the apple garden, and then they found themselves inside an apple, withdrawing from the outside world. The sands of time flowed: flowers blossomed and butterflies flew, children danced in a ring, the Ring of Fortune united and parted people, the pictures of life moved all the time, changing from forte to piano, from triumph to oblivion.

The multimedia action made everything spin: kettledrums, drums, wind instruments, xylophone, choir and soloists, little people and big expressive faces on screen with the changing Fortune at the head, blindfolded and playing with human fate. The triumphal piece «O Fortuna» was played in the beginning and in the end.

The cantata solo parties were performed by Anastasia Vasilyeva (soprano), Boris Stepanov (tenor) and Mikhail Gavrilov (baritone). The combined choir united student choirs from the St. Petersburg State University, Stieglitz St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Design, St. Petersburg State Institute of Technology, Leningrad Region College of Culture and Art. The performance was directed by the artistic director and chief conductor of «Tavrichesky» orchestra Mikhail Golikov.
Some spectators were lucky during the interval. These lucky individuals found «golden» tickets in the hall and got gift certificates and discounts from the project’s partners – Carelica Spa complex, Taxi 068, art parties «FARTUK» and others.
«The Ring of Fortune» mysterious show became the second «Tavrichesky» orchestra’s performance in the ExpoForum. The first concert took place on March 9: musicians played popular music from Soviet and American films.
The cinema show «A Man with Motion Picture Camera» will be the next event in the series of concerts. The experimental documentary of 1929 will be shown on big screen accompanied by «Tavrichesky» on September 14.
