Chinese new year declared open in st. Petersburg

A press conference dedicated to celebrating Chinese New Year in the city on the Neva River took place on 9 February in the House of Journalists – the Media Centre of St. Petersburg’s Government. Sergey Volkov, deputy CEO of ExpoForum International for commerce, spoke about the business programme of the events.

The 3rd Annual Russian-Chinese Business Forum will take place on 22 February at the Import Substitution and Localization Centre, Lenexpo Exhibition Complex. Representatives of the city administration, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, Russian Peoples’ Friendship University, Ministry of Economic Development and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Russian Railways, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry will assemble there – about 50 leading experts in Russian-Chinese relations in total.

The experts will discuss new opportunities for Russian-Chinese cooperation and the role of the Northern capital city as the key logistical junction of the Northern Transport Corridor. They will speak about the prospects for Russian exports to Chinaat the roundtable arranged to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the twin-city relations betweenSt. Petersburg andShanghai.

Russian and Chinese companies will demonstrate their goods and services in the presentation area, and the Forum itself will be held in four Lenexpo pavilions. Participants include the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from Shanxi province, Shipbuilding Corporation from the city of Wuhan, Beijing Industrial and Economic Research Centre, “Zhong-zhi” branding company, Professional Cooperative Union of Farmers from Shanxi province, Taihe Group of Companies (Indonesia), Jin Qing Yang medical institution, Country Garden holding, Guangcai Arts Association from the city of Guangzhou, Central Drama Academy from the city of Beijing, DHH legal company and others.

The organizers of the Forum are the Chinese Business Centre, St. Petersburg Government, and the People’s Republic ofChinaConsulate General inSt. Petersburg.

“Cooperation with China is an issue of strategic importance, an example of good-neighbour relations, mutually advantageous business and close friendship for St. Petersburg and Russia”, Sergey Volkov said.

The Chinese New Year (“The Festival of Spring” when translated word for word) will be celebrated inSt. Petersburgfrom 9 February to 2 March. This year,Sichuanprovince became the city administration’s festival organization partner.

The Merry Spring Festival will be celebrated in the Russian-Chinese business park on 22–23 February. Guests can look forward to a fair where Chinese and Russian products are sold, masterclasses by experts in Chinese culture, exhibitions of works by Chinese and Russian artists, photo exhibitions, tea drinking ceremonies, tasting of Chinese dishes, a concert by the Tianjin Cultural Ensemble, and a presentation by youngSt. Petersburg fashion designers.

As Yevgeny Grigoryev, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for Foreign Relations, said at the press conference, in 2018, Chinese New Year is being celebrated in 400 cities in 130 countries. And the Chinese Government selected just eight projects all over the world, the main and the most important ones, withTaiwan province,New York,Toronto,St. Petersburg and four more regions among them.

As St. Petersburg Vice-Governor Alexander Govorunov said, about 80 delegations from 20 regions of China took part in the festival just in 2017: “This demonstrates that our regional cooperation is reaching a radically new quality level”.

Palace Bridge in our city has been illuminated with decorative red lights since 2015 on the initiative of the People’s Republic ofChina’s Consulate General during the days of the “Chinese New Year – Merry Festival of Spring” celebrations.

St. Petersburgresidents and tourists will attend concerts, exhibitions, performances and lectures, masterclasses in calligraphy, painting on porcelain, fans and paper lanterns for nearly a month. The Chinese Film Festival will take place in the Rodina Movie Centre at the end of February.
