Import substitution is the most important strategic task of shipbuilding

Capabilities of Russian and foreign manufacturers of marine diesel engines and units based on them were discussed by industry representatives at the panel discussion organized within «The Maritime Congress – Far East».

The speakers were top managers of «REO» LLC, «RUMO» JSC, «PIK «Yardisel» LLC, «Apparatdiesel» LLC, and «Russian Maritime Register of Shipping» FAI (Federal Autonomous Institution). The session was moderated by Dmitry Mudrov, the official representative of Zichai Power Co. in Russia.

During the panel discussion, its participants worked on several tracks: development of the Russian market and the support measures for import substitution of marine diesel engines and units; the needs of the marine industry and current amounts of domestic production; current scientific developments and technological features of production and prospects for expanding the Russian line of marine diesel engines and units based on them.

Sergey Levanov, Deputy General Director for Shipbuilding of «RUMO» JSC, promptly drew the participants’ attention to the problems of finding partners in the domestic market.

«Import substitution has been familiar to everybody for at least 10 years. We watch, preparing for implementing import substitution. However, it turned out to be easier for shipyards to find partners in China than to conclude contracts with Russian manufacturers. The reasons are clear to everyone: lower cost, shorter production times, experience in supplying engines and, of course, risks associated with using Russian equipment on own ships», stressed Sergey Levanov.

«The Maritime Congress – Far East» was held by «NEVA International», the organizer of the largest industry exhibition «NEVA» (St. Petersburg). The next event will take place in 2026, which is supported by the agreement between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Primorsky Krai and «NEVA International».
