The 10th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum Started Its Work

Last year the Forum was cancelled because of the pandemic, so the main phrase to be repeated from all venues of the Forum during today’s anniversary opening of SPIGF 2021 has been: “This day has been looked forward to.”

From the First Lamp to the Gas Capital

The restrictions that had made the countries close international borders and stopped all the global convention and exhibition activities have now been removed in most states, and the arrival of representatives from over 30 countries is awaited in St. Petersburg at the opened leading expert venue of the gas industry: about 3,500 participants from Belgium, Switzerland, UAE, USA, Norway, Canada, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Indonesia, Australia, and dozens of other countries. The entertainment program also came into picture to emphasize the gravity of the anniversary.

“Certainly, there will not be as many foreign participants as in 2019 this time: many countries are still closed. However, all the EXPOFORUM exhibition areas are already filled which testifies that representatives of the industry have waited for the opening of our forum. The success of 2019 has been repeated,” CEO of EXPOFORUM International Sergey Voronkov said.

As a reputable discussion platform, the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum goes back to 2011. At the time organizers presented the historical exposition “St. Petersburg, the Cradle of Russian Gas”, which emphasized that all the gas industry of our country had been born in the city on the banks of the Neva River: two centuries before, the first gas street-lamp had been lighted on the Aptekarsky Island, and since then the lamps had been used to illuminate streets, palaces, theatres, and houses of noble citizens. Up to 1917, the city remained the largest manufacturer and consumer of gas. The history of the Forum is inextricably intertwined with the history of gas industry establishment in our country.

Starting from the exposition on gas distribution in our country dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the first gas lamp in Russia, over 10 years the exhibition territory has expanded from 7,000 to 30,000 sq. meters, and SPIGF business program has grown to include 20 areas.

However, the Forum became truly global, when the agenda turned to topics that were important for the entire world: natural gas motor fuel, liquefied natural gas, decarbonization, issues related to extraction, processing, delivery, and consumption. Currently, an additional gasification program is implemented in Russia – it was also covered by the program of the forum. Some new relevant issues will be discussed as well, including unconventional types of gas, logistics and transport, and application of helium.

The plenary session “Natural Gas: New Challenges and Solutions for the Global Energy” featuring heads of leading oil and gas corporations is to be the main event of the Forum.

The business part of the program is filled with remarkable discussions on the topics that are important for the entire sector and presentations of leading speakers: heads of companies, government officials and representatives of industry-specific communities, experts, analysts, etc. They will exchange best practices, practical knowledge, valuable ideas and discuss relevant problems and trends in the oil and gas sector. It’s a place for everyone to find answers to the challenges they are concerned about, as well as to work out strategic solutions aimed at provision of sustainable development of the oil and gas industry.

An important peculiarity of SPIGF 2021 is that it is held in a hybrid format. Thus, the connection with Kazakhstan will be arranged in the form of a teleconference, some roundtable discussions will be held via live broadcasts. Besides, some speakers will take part in conferences in an online mode. This year, a serious business atmosphere is dashed with interactive Kaleidoscope and Retro photo areas located in the central pavilion, as well as with a Russian Post stand where every participant can send a brand SPIGF 2021 post-card to their close ones for free.

The exhibition “A Legacy of Outstanding Russian Entrepreneurs”, organized by the Moscow Museum of Entrepreneurs, Philanthropists and Benefactors and the International Shukhov Foundation, became a landmark event.

The exhibition reveals some things regarding the activities of outstanding philanthropists and benefactors of pre-revolutionary Russia who made a huge contribution into development of the oil and gas industry. Immanuel and Carl Nobel, Alexander Bari, Vasily Kokorev, Vladimir Shukhov did not just achieve success in their fields, but also became leaders in various areas. They created, as they say now, socially responsible business, developed education, science and culture, helped people in need, built cathedrals and founded resorts. Today we pay a tribute to the noble mission of Russian philanthropists – through these unique educational expositions among other things.
