The International Congress of Mathematicians is exactly one year away!

On July 6, within the framework of the action “A year before the congress start: final countdown”, the grand opening of the art object “The Pythagorean Theorem” took place near the building of the Twelve Colleges (the Saint-Petersburg State University).

The spectacular art object symbolizes the contribution of mathematics to art. Its creators were inspired by the Russian avant-garde, especially the works of Kazimir Malevich, with its bright colors and simple geometric shapes. The QR code decorating the installation leads to the Congress website, where a clock counting down to the start of the event is located.

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the most significant meeting in the field of fundamental and applied mathematics in the world and one of the oldest scientific congresses. For the right to host a scientific event of a global scale (it is held every four years similar to the Olympic cycle), our city fought with Paris. The advantage of St. Petersburg is the rich cultural program for the guests and the merits of the Russian mathematical school. At the general assembly of ICM 2018 in Sao Paulo (Brazil), by a margin of 83:63, St. Petersburg was chosen as the next venue for the congress. During the congress, the most important prizes in the field of mathematics shall be awarded. In particular, the Fields Medals for Excellence in Mathematical Achievement and the first ICM Abakus Medal recognizing pioneering contributions to scientific computing and the mathematical aspects of computer science shall be awarded. The Gauss Prize, the Chern Medal and the Leelavati Award are equally important.

Vladimir Knyaginin, Vice Governor of St. Petersburg, Nikolai Kropachev, Rector of St. Petersburg State University, Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Congress, Andrey Romanov, Deputy Director of the Department of State Scientific and Scientific and Technical Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and Mars Khasanov, Science Director of Gazprom Neft PJSC. Sergey Voronkov, General Director of ExpoForum International was also among the guests of honour.

Holding of the International Congress of Mathematicians shall give a new impetus to the development of St. Petersburg science, strengthen the position of the city as a leading scientific and educational center. The ICM shall be held from July 6 to 14, 2022 at the Expoforum Convention and Exhibition Centre in St. Petersburg by the decision of the International Mathematical Union, and its holding is included in the Science and Universities national project.
