“Dialogues/Dialogues” at EXPOFORUM: from Discussion to Leningrad Region Symphony Orchestra Concert

On April 16, project “Dialogues/Dialogues” dedicated to the role of culture in the life of the modern youth took place in St. Petersburg at EXPOFORUM. The first part included a plenary discussion attended by well-known cultural personalities, politicians and representatives of large businesses. In the second part, the audience enjoyed a concert of the Leningrad Region Symphony Orchestra “Some strange eternity...”

The “Dialogues/Dialogues” project is organized by Dmitry Nazarov, the young founder of the Buk teen publishing house. He is currently working on a book that will be a collection of the stories by teenagers addressed to their own peers. The topic of the panel discussion was “The Role of Culture in Contemporary Society: Dialogue of Generations”. Invited participants of the event included Yana Lantratova, First Deputy Chairwoman of the State Duma Committee on Education; Nikolay Burlyaev, Russian actor, film director, writer, State Duma deputy; Sergey Voronkov, General Director of Expoforum-International; Dmitry Pevtsov, Russian actor; Olga Sotchikhina, Director of the Aleksandr Suvorov Memorial Museum; Vladimir Gronsky, Director of the Russian National Library; Elena Kotova, Chairwoman of the Committee for Culture, Sports and Youth Policy of Tikhvin municipal district, and others.

Nikolay Burlyaev said: “It matters that we create new state projects supporting the youth’s engagement in cultural events. Our kids are the best and very conscious, but we, the adults, need to create the necessary conditions for the spiritual and academic education of children and teenagers. The Pushkin card alone is not enough.”

Yana Lantratova emphasized that the dialogue between adults and children should always be “on equal terms” and changes in their behavior should not be overlooked. Besides, she stressed the importance of associations in hard times:

“Even if we are different, we need to learn to listen to one another, be closer and try to understand. An ability to find a common language is one of the fundamentals of our society. This common thing helps find the cultural codes imprinted in the great works of art. Everyone has their own understanding of Pushkin, Tchaikovsky, and Kandinsky, but the important thing is that they actually seek to understand them. That people looking at them look in the same direction.”

Sergey Voronkov thanked the participants and Dmitry Nazarov for the discussion.

“It is especially important to talk to the young people these days to protect them from the negative influence of various external information sources. A society of any country develops in 80-year cycles that include approximately four generations. The 2000s is a new era, and you, our youth, are the first to enter it! You are generation Z, the generation of winners, the future of our country,” general director of the Expoforum International Company said in conclusion of the event.

After the discussion, the audience was presented a concert “Some strange eternity. From the classic to rock”. It included the songs to Pushkin's verses performed by Russian singer and musician Eduard Sharlot, as well as fragments of “Pushkin. Rock. Love” – the first biographical musical in Russia by St. Petersburg composer Victor Pleshak performed by the soloists of the Philharmonic for Children and Youth.

“This is the first composition for the musical theatre dedicated to the life of Pushkin. I am sure that the chosen genre is close and relatable to the young audience who heard fragments from this work for the first time,” said Mikhail Golikov, Artistic Director of the Leningrad Region Symphony Orchestra.
