Starcon, a major event for sci-fi fans, started in St. Petersburg

From 8 July through 10, more than 2,000 cosplayers, dressed up as movie, cartoon, comics and game characters, take part in StarCon, the 17th annual international festival of science fiction, cinema and science. This year the event is being held for the first time at EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre, occupying a record-setting area of 36,000 sq. metres.

The festival featured more than 30 theme booths and large-scale decorations dedicated to popular movies, games and literary works. Here, you can dive into the fantasy universes of Fallout, Resident Evil, The Witcher, Dungeon and Dragons, Star Trek and many others.

Fans of science and fiction will be able to see one of the first designs for the development of the Red Planet. The working model of the Mars rover developed by Russian scientists in the early '90s was restored specially for the festival. Anyone can remotely direct the Mars rover and pass the route with obstacles simulating the Martian desert.

The EXPOFORUM territory allowed an enormous sports area to be set up with a trampoline arena, a 6-metre climbing wall, a ropes course, a laser-tag training ground, a bow shooting range and other entertainment for outdoor enthusiasts.

The gaming area welcomes everybody to take part in game tournaments (Fifa, Rocket Leage, Hearthstone, CS:GO), play new and retro console games, as well as meet and chat with independent studios and indie developers. During StarCon, Russian film distributors will hold presentations and free screenings of the highest-grossing and impressive movies of this and last year for the visitors.

The festival hosts are Max Brandt and Kostya Pavlov, creators of LizzzTV, the popular online channel. The guys will make an excellent show and show the viewers the “live” version of their programme “Scientific Noobs”.
