The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum opened in Expoforum

Russia’s leading economic forum opened on 16 June in the most modern convention and exhibition centre in Eastern Europe. Delegations, international companies, businessmen, politicians and public figures from 130 countries, a total of about 12,000 people, participated in the event.

The Forum took over the entire EXPOFORUM site: three pavilions and Russia’s sole world class convention centre. The total SPIEF-2016 area is 2.5 times larger than the SPIEF-2015: about 100,000 sq. m, including 66,000 temporary structures, whereas SPIEF-2015 was only about 43,000 sq. m.

Sergei Prikhodko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Government, Chairman of the SPIEF Organisational Committee noted that the total number of all categories of participants at SPIEF-2016 was 15% greater than last year and is close to 10,000 people, with 2,500 accredited media applications, including video and Photo Host.

Expo-Forum International, the leading Northwest organiser of exhibitions, conventions and events not only provided the Forum with a world class site, but also the support services, including exhibit construction, catering and site administration.

Sergei Voronkov, ExpoForum International CEO states “Our team was included in the preparation and organisational work of a leading economic forum. We will host the largest world conventions in the EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre, and in the future, there are already applications for 2022-2024”.

The key topic of the 2016 forum is “Capitalising on the New Economic Reality”. The SPIEF programme includes five main topics and combines 72 events in various formats. Today, 16 June was the official opening ceremony with the participation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the President of Guinea Alpha Condé. The opening session was held “Macroeconomic Policy: Action Strategy”, where Deputy Chairman of the President’s Economic Council Alexei Kudrin, Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina and Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov discussed key trends in economic policy for stable economic growth.

Issues of the geo-economics of major infrastructure projects were reviewed at the panel session with the participation of Chairman of the Management Committee, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC Gazprom, President and Chairman of the Board of OJSC Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Dirk Ahlborn, and others. During the traditional programme “Conversations with the Extraordinary” a meeting was held with the President of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy (2007–2012).

Tomorrow, 17 June, there will be an Opening Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a Business Breakfast with Chairman of the Executive Board of Sberbank of Russia Herman Gref, roundtable discussions on investment cooperation with Italy, Germany and Latin America, panel session on the economics of sports, Russia 24 and CNBC TV debates, Global Energy Prize Awards Ceremony, and much more.

A diverse cultural programme has been planned for the Forum attendees: theatre shows, charity events and auctions, topical presentations, showings of artistic films and excursions.

The St. Petersburg Economic Forum has been held since 1997, since 2006 under the patronage of the Russian Federation President. In the last decade, the SPIEF was included among the leading global economic sites and received the informal title of “Russian Davos”.
