Union of Medicine and Social Services

Joint effective information work of doctors and social services can be the key to successful geriatric care – this is the conclusion reached by the participants of the XVII scientific and practical international conference “Pushkov Readings”: interdepartmental interaction in the provision of geriatric care”.

It is this interaction that will help to launch a pilot project for a long-term care system, implemented within the framework of the federal project “Senior Generation” of the national project “Demography”.

The conference was organized by the Health Committee and the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “North-Western State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov”

This event kicked off the congress and business program of the “Senior Generation” forum 2023. For more than three hours, the speakers shared their sore points. Among the speakers there were Galina Kolosova, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Social Policy, Maksim Kabanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, head of the St. Petersburg State Budgetary Institution “Hospital for War Veterans”, chief external geriatrician of the Health Committee, Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation, Natalia Sovetkina, Deputy Chief Physician for Medical Affairs of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “North-Western State Medical University named after. I. I. Mechnikov”, assistant at the Department of Geriatrics, Propaedeutics and Management in Nursing named after E. S. Pushkova, Olga Rizakhanova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Health, Economics and Health Management of the North-Western State Medical University named after. I. I. Mechnikov”, and many other prominent physicians.

“Our forum is a serious professional platform. This year, representatives from 37 regions have registered with us,” noted Galina Kolosova. – Today the forum is being held in a new format; on the first day of work, we will determine the prospects for the development of the social sphere. I hope this will become a good tradition”.

She noted that it is important to continue to build bridges between health and social care systems. For now, the efficiency of work is reduced by the lack of convenient digital services and the opportunity for professional obtaining of data and exchanging the information between departments with regard to those elderly people who need both medical and social assistance.

Galina Koloskova emphasized that it is important for specialists in these two areas to train each other and develop professional competencies that fall into different activities related to the population aging. This is necessary, among other things, for the pilot project of the long-term care system to work, which project is being implemented within the framework of the federal project “Senior Generation” of the national project “Demography”.

Maksim Kabanov focused on the fact that geriatric care is now included in the national project “Demography”.

Geriatrics is a borderline discipline between healthcare and social care, the specialist insists. 121 years is the age limit “laid down” even in Scripture. But it is important to live up to this age as healthy as possible, with a strong and clear mind. It is crucial, that in addition to high-precision medical care within the hospital walls, there is high-quality geriatric support outside its walls.

Natalia Sovetkina spoke on the history of the City Geriatric Medical and Social Center. In 1999, UN experts on aging, having familiarized themselves with the work of the St. Petersburg City Geriatric Center, named it among the ten best institutions of this type in Europe.
